An Overview of the Yucca Mountain Repository Setting and Performance

ABSTRACT

Yucca Mountain, located in southern Nevada in the Mojave Desert, is being considered as a geologic repository for high-level radioactive waste. Yucca Mountain is a part of the Southwestern Nevada volcanic field situated in the southern part of the Great Basin.

About the Speaker

James A. Blink is the Associate Program Leader for the Yucca Mountain and Repository Science Program at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. He has worked in Las Vegas on the YMP since the early 1990s, focusing on thermal hydrology, engineered barrier performance, performance confirmation, and total system performance assessment. Dr. Blink has also worked on the military and commercial applications of laser fusion at LLNL, and served as an officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for nine years. He holds a B.S. in Engineering Science from the University of Nevada - Reno, an M.S. in Nuclear Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. in Engineering from the University of California - Davis. His talk will provide an overview of the Yucca Mountain Project.
